David Bowie Has New Music – Where Are We Now

The Thin White Duke must be using the royal “we” to access where he is right now. The guy is 66 years old !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! But he has new music, he still epitomizes cool and doing your own thing – in a classy, fairly graceful, way.

You can listen to his new single, “Where Are We Now” from the vimeo link here (too lazy to direct embed right now) – and what do you think? He has quite a mixed record of records. My personal favorite – and I have not listened to a lot of his CDs – is “Outside” from 1995. It tells a Queensrychean tale of drama in the brave new world of connections. And thankfully not R. Kelly’s sap opera (not a typo).

Feeling Like An Accomplished Dad

Last night, approximately 8,051 grass burrs lost their tight purchase on reality and Eddie’s school hoodie jacket. It took me three and a half hours to scrape off, pick off, roll-stick off and attempt to vacuum off the little pricklies, which made Eddie cry Saturday.

We were walking in the wrong area of the large Kawani’s Park lookouching for his flag football practice (7/8 years old). As we turned back he and Jack asked if they could roll down the hill. Sure. I walked on ahead and the next thing I see, Eddie is picking at his body and by the time they caught up with me again, Eddie was “ow ow ow owieeeee.” Not only were they on his jacket but they had got on his shirt and inside his shirt. I didn’t see them all at first and then I saw the hundreds and thousands all over his jacket. It was an impressive display.

So, last night, I sat down in the living room and carefully oh so carefully pulled them off. I had planned to go to bed early but after putting them to bed, reading them Prince Caspian, I stayed up until and went to bed with a very satisfying feeling as I looked on a clear, pokie-free jacket.

That’s Me

I don’t get into your business – unless I think you’re about to fall, then I give a hand, my body, my soul – and don’t care if you hate me afterward as long as you’re safe.

The Nasty Future of the Web and Its Citizens

I’ve largely been against people willingly “commoditizing” themselves and willingly giving up their privacy just because it seems like a cool trend and, anyways, inevitable.

Here’s further insight into that realm of belief, with commentary from the Slash.dot community, here. So much of that commentary to me – at a quick glance through the first 30 comments or so – seems to be missing the big picture; instead happy to keep the blinkers on, happy to wallow in mediocrity.

The Terms of Service for Zurker

Zurker is the Facebook alternative that honestly seems a bit gimicky at first, but there’s nothing to lose. The Terms of Service have been unchanged since Dec. 2011, to today:

These Guys – Best Gift Ever

I don’t talk about them much here. It’s not because I’m worried about things, it’s just that I don’t do a lot here period. And I do like to take time, usually, writing about those I care about. But here’s a few pics from this week – Eddie dressing up on mismatch day yesterday; Jack riding a mini-landbound boogie board yesterday after seeing Santa and both of them getting their kicks on route .66.

Fight? Are We Allowed to Mention Our Rights?

“Some people like to be stepped on – some people like to remind others they have rights – whether that’s government or corporations that need to listen. Non-violent – that’s more than OK, it’s a founding principle of humanity.” — Temple Stark

Seems a lot of people are happily gleeful to shoot down the idea that Instagram / Facebook shouldn’t get access to re-purpose people’s photos to make a little money. Seems if you sign the terms of agreement once, any change, no matter the permutation, should just be sucked up. Or you know, you can cancel your presence there. Except there are conflicting reports on whether, even that works.

So, even if some are just jumping because they’re noticing a trend, or whether some have genuine concerns and are scared of losing control of their rights – and their property rights – making a reasoned fuss seems like a better move than to just accept every new violation.

This one isn’t about Instagram being able to sell my photos, it’s about losing control of the rights to my photos and, yes, wondering how widespread my kids’ photos will get and what they’ll be used to sell.

Just saying, “They would never do …” seems incredibly naive. Odd, coming from those calling others naive. I stopped using Instagram the day the Facebook purchase was announced. I view Facebook as a necessary evil at this point and do not trust them, but surely no one would agree it’s not without good reason. I don’t like their “Sponsored Ads” there either. If people had remained silent, Facebook – or any other company – would not have reason to reverse tack.

Sanctimonious sarcasm never works. Lashing out anger rarely ever works. But en masse works, because numbers matter. Even if you’re a minority and the majority is just people who don’t care, you have the right to fight for your rights. That includes mentioning to people who make bad decisions that you really don’t like that.

Many people I notice think that’s great when it comes to government, but think if you’re using a free service, if it’s a corporation, you shouldn’t speak up. Guess what, each change that takes something else, makes the service less free.

Thanksgiving 2012 at BS Ranch

After launching a few rocket balloons, some getting stuck in trees and watching Uncle Ricky Rat and Shayla come back on their half hour quad trip I am just now sitting down with pecan pie and some delicious cake called Thanksgiving Dump, enjoying the rapidly cooling Punkin Center evening.

I’m listening to the chattering conversation of wife’s family and people I don’t know, with the sound of plastic bat baseball down below me and just now relaxing. Just now. A good day. Here’s a few photos from the day.

So I Guess This Needs A Title

Focus on past success when it looks like you’re on the edge of immediate failure.

- Temple, 11/13/12 (I just wrote this for something else.) This put me in mind of a joke I first heard about Margaret Thatcher’s career. When she became Prime minister we were on the edge of a cliff, facing great economic collapse. Since then, we’ve taken a big step forward.

Here’s the Kicker; An Exercise in – What-If

Sunday’s game wasn’t without drama. After both teams scrambled mightily for field position in the overtime, 49ers kicker David Akers missed a 41-yard field goal, a letdown followed by brief jubilation by the Rams when their rookie kicker, Greg Zuerlein, put a 53-year attempt through the uprights. That would’ve ended the game, but some lack of discipline by the Rams resulted in a delay of game penalty, and Zuerlein failed to make the ensuing 58-yarder.
