WordPress Admin Error

No, not here. Everything is still swimming here.

Nope, at Polstate.com, I had just got up the verve to restart the blog, and I wanted to post a “hello I’m back” with a little bit about what the site was to become. Not political news in other words.

Anyone with a WordPress blog knows that “admin” is the default user.

Further anyone WP blogger knows that when you type in the wrong password it says:

ERROR: Incorrect password.

So I type in “admin” and password and get this instead, complete with capitalization differential:

Error: Wrong username.

Um, !@#$% and !@#$% again.

Since the site is currently dormant my urgency isn’t vast or near crisis mode. More vex mode because I have NO idea how to fix it.

I could get into the site with the GUEST username and password, but in that mode I can’t publish anything, so it gets me no further than the comforting knowledge that the entire site isn’t screwbled.

But this weekend,  a big chunk of time will be devoted to figuring it out.

Pinballing Wizardry - One Flip

Pinballing Wizardry is a not so brilliant way of saying, quick collection of links. Every now and then, perhaps about twice a month I’ll be throwing together links that are not only interesting to me but might seem useful or interesting to others, as well.

Fun. Useful. Strange. Educational. They store up sometimes and they need a release - AKA - Pinball!

I CAN GUARANTEE YOU WILL FIND AT LEAST ONE INTERESTING THING IN THE LIST, NO MATTER HOW SHORT.

Category Invisibility Plug-in Doesn’t Work

I had saved a category invisibility plug-in that worked in Word Press 2.0.x. Waste of effort because it does not work in 2.5.1.

I’m off to go find a replacement. It doesn’t make posts private, it takes them off the front page but otherwise works the same. And it IS listed on say, the Liveblogging category page. and they still have permalinks etc.

Will search for replacement now.

UPDATE, Friday 18:57 - Ok, so I didn’t start searching until about five minutes ago. I found a working version of this plugin and it says it works “up to” 2.51. it includes 2.5.1.

The category visibility also, unexpectedly, includes Tags. So the one category I put in invisible mode is Liveblogging, where I use the CoverItLive Web application. It just ruins the look of the front page, if I haven’t already.

First Spam Comment At New Digs

I just received my first spam comment - to one of my pages which isn’t active yet but is live. Hooray, you never forget your firs .. well, now that you mention it I hit delete so fast I have no frakkin clue.

Now I have to go see whether I spaced it and forgot to install Akismet plug-in - which works a dream.

UPDATE: Nope I hadn’t installed Akismet. Just did so, and upgraded to newest version.

My Far-Flung Hosting Places

I have two Web sites registered at one place and about 9 registered at another.

I forgot where I had BlastYourPodcast.com hosted. I thought it was at Blogs-About but it was not. So I checked in to NameTV.com where I have my 9 domains registered. I had just established that where I have TempleStark.com - this blog - at Gate.com - was useless for my needs as I get only one mySQL database and it’s version 3.36.50 (Whatever it was).

So I wanted to see what NameTV had in the way of hosting. And actually I know it’s not NameTV.com, they were pretty much an affiliate of whatever company it was to start with and whatever company it is now. I’m not even sure of the name but let’s call it Domains Priced Right or DPR.

I found that they did have MySQL 4.0 plus. Big thumbs up. That’s when I also discovered that I had BlastYourPodcast.com hosted there and already had a database set up. SCORE! I found out they have 10 databases per account. DOUBLE SCORE.

Except, when I tried to get into the database manager I didn’t have my password. So that’s the 1st support ticket going out.

ASIDE - And they promise a reply in at least 11 hours. WTF? Gate.com was at least 24 hours. Anyone ever heard of an emergency? Apparently not because at PolState.com I had a sudden invasion where I suddenly found my front page as a list of porn links. And I sent it double emergency high priority - and never heard anything back.

BACK-A-SIDE - So, hopefully I’ve found a good host for this site, it may happen over the weekend but knowing the speed of change at these places - wait it’s the new faster Web world, um, no - I’m not holding my breath.

I still have opensourceintel.com and opensourceintel.us. I have ustorturepolicy.us, though I thought I dropped it. I have thepodcastblog.com and officialpodcastblog.com, casagrandephotos.com (forwarded) and pinalcountyphotos.com (forwarded).

And I have the live, templestark.com, blastyourpodcast.com - likely the next site to get WP 2.5.1 that’ll work and polstate.com, and well carmenallen.com for an ex-girlfriend.

I’ve probably forgotten some.

I Do Have A WP Install That Works By The Way

Just to make myself feel better, i should acknowledge that I do have an updated WP test blog that works and is fast. It’s at the olitical site I’m thinking of dumping at polstate.com/verytas.

I know for a fact that my hosting company there offers multiple mySQL databases so I don’t have to confuse myself. Also It was WP 2.3.3 and it screams along quickly. i just upgraded it - the proper way not by complete replacement - to WP 2.5.1 and it still screams along nicely.

So yeah, all evidence points to my TempleStark.com hosting company not having a useful mySQL, which is slowing access. Even though I have determined this I sent a support e-mail asking a few applicable questions, because i wanted to see if my understanding was their understanding.

New Theme, Like For Beauty

I do like this theme if only because in the middle of all this technical ugliness - and my own ugly ignorance, of course, it is beautiful.

It’s also apparently a very popular WordPress theme, with some 20,000 downloads, though I have never seen it and I thought I’d been everywhere.

Julian Klewes at h4×3d.com designed it. Hooray.

I first installed WordPress almost 2 months ago now and at the time installing the thing had been the hump I could not get over.

That is no longer the case, and the design aspects, though I will have to concentrate on elements, are elements of PHP that I understand. Though it will be labor intensive and little details can be changed for big aesthetics, it will be fun.

But now I may have to go through the ugliness of changing hosting companies to get this thing up to speed. And that will require money. Being unemployed at the moment, that is like bleeding slowly from an unhealing wound.

WordPress Install at Host

It appears my current Templestark.com host does not support / offer the version of MySQL that WordPress 2.5.1 needs or WordPress 2.3.3 either I would imagine.

It needs according to WP documentation:

PHP version 4.3 or greater
MySQL version 4.0 or greater

The support document I found, seems to indicate that Gate.com / formerly Hostsave.com only has MySQL 3.23.56 (but does have / support for PHP 4.3.10.

I can’t quite tell if it’s out of date, but it is ominous that it was apparently last reviewed 12/4/2006

Now my OLD Movable Type blog / software was also slow and creaky but I’m sure fell within the bounds of any old version of MySQL. So I don’t think that was the only problem going.

(I’m not blogging about much of anything else at the moment so this entire blog can be deleted if needed. I’m just typing these updates to keep it clear in my head)

Backwards Steps With WordPress

Two Steps Forward and Two Steps Back In A Different Direction.

I Have Been Attempting A Reload of This Blog Or A Restart For Hours, Inexplicably Getting To A Certain Point Where The WordPress Software Would Stop, Saying The Server Was Not Responding, and Then Say The Blog Software Was Already Installed. Doing So Before, That Is, Sending Me Any New Log-in Password Info.

I Have Managed To Erase My Previous Blog At TempleStark.com. Accidentally. And Most Likely Corrupted the Database. However, I Did Back Up All All The Words, So If Push Comes To Machine Gunning WordPress HQ (Not Really) I’ll Be Able To Cut And Paste - Gulp - About 1,200 Posts.

I Only Reset Because A Few People Told Me Either The Site Wouldn’t Load At All For Them Or It Did After A Fist-Clenching Wait. I THINK This is Better But Still Slow.

I’m in WP 2.5.1 Now BTW, Yet I’m Not Even Sure My Hosting Company Supports The Latest PHP. And I Upload A Song To See How The New WP Handled It. Hopefully By Having It Ready To Play.

This Will Be My Last Post Here

This will be my last post here.

Starting with NBA Liveblogging of Spurs VS Hornets Game 5 in about an hour I will start posting my blog @ www.templestark.com/tas

This blog site here will be deleted some time in the very near future, likely later this week. I have backed it up for posterity. A new Splash page will take it’s place, for better navigation to other parts of my site and my online presence.

The new blog will be designed up even more but even now the main benefits are twofold:

1) You can comment EASILY, so please do.

2) It’s WordPress 2.3.3 but will before the end of the month be 2.5.X but one step at a time. This means all kinds of good things, but mostly that now I know what I’m doing with the software and can change and fix. This old blog is on Movable Type 3.121, which I believe was the last free version of Movable Type.

I’m really looking forward to testing my design skills on the new blog. Again templestark.com/tas
